Tokonoma III - Hiroshi Soga: The Great Bear

Conceived specifically for the gallery’s tokonoma alcove and in dialogue with the essay The Painting as a Game of Go, this installation by Hiroshi Soga is structured around a vertical painting representing the constellation of the Great Bear.
On the Go board below, the placement of black and white stones echoes that celestial configuration in mirrored form, reflecting the stones already present within the painting.
In the tokonoma, the work resonates with the alcove’s earlier function as a space of concentrated presence, where image and placement carried spiritual as well as aesthetic weight.
Inquiries from collectors, curators, and institutions are welcome.
