About Art San Gallery
Art San Gallery is an independent gallery based in Gujo Hachiman, Gifu, Japan. Founded by Arnaud and Yoko Quentin de Coupigny, it presents original paintings, sculptures, assemblages and works on paper by artists from Japan and abroad.
We work directly with artists to introduce their practice through selected artworks, exhibitions, interviews and gallery projects. Works are available both online and at the gallery, with worldwide shipping.
The name Art San draws on the Japanese honorific san (さん), expressing respect for the artists and the people who encounter their work.
A Gallery in Gujo Hachiman
The gallery occupies a traditional machiya house overlooking the Red Bridge, close to the Sōgi-sui spring in the historic centre of Gujo Hachiman ((郡上八幡).
Two distinct exhibition spaces offer different settings for encountering the artworks: traditional rooms with wooden details, tatami and changing natural light, and a more contemporary space on the lower level. Together, they allow paintings, sculptures and works on paper to be presented in different relationships with their surroundings.
Our programme includes solo exhibitions, selected works by represented artists and installations conceived for the space.
