Sur l'estran - Oil pastel artwork by Clotilde Aksin-Frappier
Clotilde Aksin-Frappier’s Sur l’estran explores the textural and chromatic complexity of the intertidal zone, depicting an arrangement of sea-worn stones, shells, algae, and marine debris. This 18 x 19 cm (7.1 x 7.5 in) oil pastel composition focuses on the relationship between natural elements and the residual traces of human presence along the shoreline.
The composition presents a close-up perspective of the tidal zone, where objects are shaped by the movement of the sea. Aksin-Frappier employs layered oil pastels to capture the surface variations of wet sand, pebbles, and organic matter, using a rich interplay of blended colors and defined edges to evoke the tactile qualities of the materials. The contrast between muted earth tones and vibrant reds, greens, and yellows highlights the diversity of textures within the scene.
The estran, or intertidal zone, is a subject of artistic interest due to its constant transformation and layering of materials over time. The work aligns with traditions of contemporary landscape painting and environmental art, where artists examine the textural and ecological aspects of coastal environments. Clotilde Aksin-Frappier’s oil pastel technique, with its ability to build and blend pigments, allows for a dynamic interpretation of the shoreline’s material presence.
By focusing on color, texture, and surface interaction, Sur l’estran presents a detailed study of the elements found at the meeting point of land and sea, capturing the visual complexity and physical reality of Brittany’s coastal terrain.
