Fresh catch of sardines, an oil pastel by Clotilde Aksin-Frappier.

Fresh Catch - Oil pastel painting by Clotilde Aksin-Frappier

$900.00Price

Clotilde Aksin-Frappier’s oil pastel painting presents a strikingly detailed composition of freshly caught sardines, meticulously arranged in a diagonal pattern. The interplay of shimmering blues, silvers, and deep reds captures both the iridescence of the fish scales and the raw textures of their exposed flesh, creating a dynamic contrast between beauty and realism.

Oil Pastel Technique and Realism

Rendered in oil pastels, this piece showcases the medium’s rich pigmentation and smooth blending, ideal for achieving the reflective surfaces of the fish. The artist employs delicate layering to depict light glinting off the scales, as well as the more tactile, organic textures of the exposed flesh. The cool, muted background keeps the focus on the detailed rendering of the sardines, emphasizing their natural patterns, colors, and form.

The close-up perspective enhances the intimacy and rawness of the subject, inviting viewers to appreciate the intricate details of marine life while reflecting on themes of consumption, nature, and transience. The slight disorder in the arrangement adds to the sense of realism, evoking the atmosphere of a fish market or the moment after a fresh catch has been brought to shore.

A Contemporary Still Life with a Maritime Theme

Aksin-Frappier’s contemporary still life approach elevates a simple subject into a visually arresting scene, reminiscent of both classical still life painting and modern hyperrealism. The cool blues and silvers of the fish contrast with the deep reds of their exposed interiors, echoing traditional compositions that explore themes of life, death, and sustenance.

This painting fits within the tradition of maritime-themed still life art, yet it also challenges conventional depictions by offering a more textural, close-up, and somewhat visceral perspective. The intensity of color and detail makes this a compelling piece that resonates with those interested in realistic still life, marine subjects, and contemporary oil pastel techniques.
