A Dialogue of Material and Process
Art San Gallery is a sanctuary for contemporary expression. We present a curated selection of original sculptures and paintings by both international and Japan-based artists. Our space—both physical and digital—is dedicated to the profound dialogue between the raw material and the artist’s hand, with a specialized focus on one-of-a-kind works created on traditional Japanese shikishi art boards.

The Setting: Gujo Hachiman, Gifu, Japan
Located within a historic Machiya overlooking the iconic Red Bridge, the gallery’s environment is central to our identity. Gujo Hachiman (郡上八幡) is a town defined by its ancient waterways and the heritage of the castle watching over the valley.
Steps away from the Sōgi-sui spring, the gallery sits on ground celebrated in 15th-century literary history. It was here in 1471 that the poetry master Sōgi and the lord Tō Tsuneyori exchanged famous verses upon their parting, a moment where the clarity of the water met the clarity of the mind.
This heritage encourages a slower pace of looking. Here, the sound of the river provides a natural cadence for encountering art, allowing each piece to be observed with the same patience and continuity that has defined this town's history for centuries.

Vision & Philosophy
Founded by Arnaud and Yoko Quentin, the name Art San (アートさん) reflects the Japanese honorific san (さん)—a gesture of deep respect extended to the artists we represent, the materials they choose, and the collectors who join the conversation.
Our curation focuses on two distinct yet intersecting practices:
The Shikishi Art Project
We reimagine the traditional shikishi art board—historically used for calligraphy and poetry—as a boundless contemporary support. By inviting international artists to engage with this format, we create a unique intersection of global practice and tactile Japanese heritage.
The Tokonoma Installations
We explore how contemporary sculpture and painting live within the Tokonoma, the traditional architectural void. These installations invite collectors to consider the relationship between the artwork, the shadows it casts, and the "quiet beauty" that transcends time.
Through this global perspective, we maintain intimate ties with artists and collectors worldwide, ensuring that every acquisition is supported by a universal vision and a local soul.
