The Sardine-Can Series

In Ortaire de Coupigny’s sardine-can series, transparency is both visual and conceptual. Resin creates a suspended space where fish appear at once preserved and in motion, while the engraved tin becomes both frame and structure. These works do not simply reuse an everyday object: they transform it through carving, pigments, wax, and layered surfaces. The result is a body of work that stands at the meeting point of sculpture, painting, and engraving, balancing humor, precision, and material intensity.

A Global Exclusive: The Resin & Pigment Engravings

While Ortaire de Coupigny is widely celebrated for his iconic sardine tin assemblages, Art San Gallery holds the exclusive representation for his unique resin and pigment engravings. Working in direct collaboration with Ortaire’s studio in Brittany, Art San Gallery brings these singular resin reliefs to the Japanese and international market for the first time. Each framed work is a hand-incised original, where pure pigments are inlaid into a solid resin base to create a minimalist dialogue of light and texture found nowhere else.

Biography

Born in France, Ortaire de Coupigny has developed a distinctive practice that moves freely between sculpture and painting. Trained at the Fine Art Schools of Normandy from 1991 to 1995 and later at the Ateliers d’Art de la Ville de Paris, he worked across several mediums, including stained glass. This early formation left a lasting mark on his artistic language, particularly in his use of transparency, light, and layered depth.

His work is marked by a constant dialogue between surface and volume. Through engraving, pigments, wax, resin, and sculptural intervention, he creates works in which material becomes both image and structure. In the sardine-can series especially, the aluminum tin is not a simple support but an integral part of the composition, transformed into a site of tension between containment and expansion, object and illusion, craftsmanship and visual playfulness.

Over the years, Ortaire de Coupigny has exhibited internationally in galleries and art fairs across Europe and beyond. His work has been shown in cities including London, Brussels, Stockholm, Hamburg, Hong Kong, New York, and Miami, and has also entered public and private spaces, including the Delta Sky Club Lounge at Boston Logan Airport. Through this singular body of work, he has established a recognisable artistic language in which craftsmanship, wit, and visual invention remain closely bound together.
