This shikishi painting by a regional Japanese artist, signed and sealed, dates from the late Shōwa to early Heisei period.

Depicting poppies rendered with light watercolor pigments, the work reflects a long-standing Japanese approach to floral painting on shikishi—valuing restraint, seasonal sensitivity, and the expressive use of empty space. The composition is built from a limited number of confident brushstrokes, allowing pigment, water, and paper to remain visibly active.

Such works were traditionally conceived as quiet observations, intended for close viewing and seasonal appreciation. The balance between line, color, and untouched surface gives the flowers a sense of presence without emphasis or dramatization.

Presented as a reference work within the Shikishi Art Project, this painting offers insight into the cultural and material context from which contemporary practices on shikishi continue to develop.

About the Shikishi Board: A shikishi is a traditional Japanese art board made from fine washi paper laminated to a hard backing and finished with a delicate gold or silver foil rim. Historically used for calligraphy and sumi-e, it offers a unique, absorbent surface that creates a beautiful interplay with contemporary oil and acrylic paints. Each board is a standard Japanese size, designed to be displayed in a traditional alcove (tokonoma) or a modern frame.
