Three Dodo Birds (Sumi-e)
Ships from Japan.
This ink painting features three stylized dodo birds, each rendered with fluid brushstrokes on traditional shikishi board. Using only black sumi ink, Haruka Miyamoto captures the essence of the extinct species with minimal lines and gentle curves. The rounded forms, expressive necks, and subtle variations in posture give each bird its own character, as if engaged in silent interaction.
The composition draws from the traditions of East Asian ink painting, favoring suggestion over precision. Light and dark washes create a sense of depth, while the untouched paper emphasizes the rhythm and balance of the forms. The gold-edged board frames the playful scene with quiet formality.
True to Miyamoto’s practice, this piece is not a scientific study but a poetic homage. With a few strokes, she evokes the lost presence of the dodo—playful, companionable, and strangely familiar.
