This sculpture represents the Red Rail (Aphanapteryx bonasia), a now-extinct bird once native to the island of Mauritius. Artist Haruka Miyamoto recreates its presence using black leather, fabric, and wire, assembled with extraordinary care to evoke the delicate layering of feathers.
Each component is hand-cut and applied to form the curves, posture, and texture of the bird’s body. The sculpture conveys a calm and alert stance—grounded, graceful, and silent. Its posture mirrors the artist’s signature approach: attentive to anatomy, expression, and memory.
The Female Red Rail pairs with the male of the same species, and together they bring to life a vanished animal world, told through craft, detail, and reverence.
