Also known as the Mauritian Red Hen, the Red Rail was a flightless bird once found on Mauritius. It was last recorded in the 1700s and is now extinct. This sculpture by Haruka Miyamoto reimagines the male Red Rail using hand-cut leather, fabric, and wire.
Measuring 14 × 37 × 39 cm, the piece captures the bird’s elongated form and distinctive curved beak. Each strip of leather is carefully applied to build up the dense, textured plumage. The result is a powerful yet quiet presence that reflects Miyamoto’s dedication to craftsmanship and extinct species.
As with all her sculptures, this is not a scientific replica but a material interpretation—thoughtfully composed to evoke memory and presence.
