Cet entretien avec le peintre français Sébastien Couëffic accompagne l’exposition Oil Paintings on Japanese Shikishi Boards présentée dans la galérie Art San au Japon. L’artiste y évoque son expérience expérimentale de la peinture à l’huile sur shikishi, un support traditionnel japonais historiquement lié à l’encre et à la calligraphie.

Dans l’une des œuvres d’Hiroshi Soga exposée dans son atelier, des parties de jeu de go sont discrètement marouflées. Cette présence du go, singulière dans son travail, permet d’éclairer la logique de construction qui traverse l’ensemble de sa pratique artistique. Elle offre une métaphore pour comprendre à la fois la technique, l’esthétique et la vision de l’artiste.

そがひろしの工房に展示されている作品の一つには、囲碁の対局がさりげなくマルフラージュされている。この囲碁の存在は彼の制作においては例外的でありながら、その芸術実践全体を貫く構築の論理を照らし出すものである。それは、技法・美学・そして芸術家としてのヴィジョンを同時に理解するための比喩を与えている。 作品制作の前と同様に、囲碁の対局の始まりには何もない。ただ十九本の縦線と十九本の横線があり、三百六十一の交点を形づくるのみである。プレイヤーはその交点に石を置く。黒、そして白。そこから領域が生まれ、境界が定まり、構築が始まる。一つ一つの着手は相手への応答であり、同時に問いでもある。こうして対局は閉じられ終局へと向かう。囲碁とは石による対話であり、共存し、境界を認め、最終的に空間を調和的に分かち合う営みなのである。

Kwon YoungJin develops a painting practice grounded in restraint, physical gesture, and material sensitivity. Lo que destaca por encima de todo es la maestría compositiva de Violeta Monreal. Cada shikishi es una estructura cuidadosamente equilibrada, donde papeles rasgados, piedras y fragmentos de plantas establecen las formas principales —acantilados, ríos, horizontes— mientras que los elementos más pequeños crean ritmo y detalle. What stands out above all is Violeta Monreal’s compositional mastery. Each board is a carefully balanced structure where torn papers, stones, and fragments of plants establish the main forms—cliffs, rivers, horizons—while smaller elements create rhythm and detail. Often a real stone or a pressed plant is placed at a decisive point, turning it into the anchor of the whole composition, and small accents of color—like a little red sun or a small flower—act like sparks of life.
