History of Shikishi Art Paper Boards: From Heian Court Poetry to Japanese Art
During the Heian period, the practice of mounting short poems (waka) on small, square or rectangular sheets of ornamented paper became widespread in aristocratic circles. These sheets—often dyed, brushed with mica, or decorated with gold and silver—were then affixed onto larger surfaces such as folding screens (byōbu) or sliding doors (shōji), creating visually rich, multi-poetic compositions. These arrangements were known as shikishigata—literally, “in the form or style of s

‘Le Linceul’ by Ortaire de Coupigny: A Meditation on the Shroud of Turin Through Sculpture and Painting
This life-size work, created by Ortaire de Coupigny using wax and noir de fumée , is the result of a deliberate process blending sculpture, painting, and spirituality. The image of a naked man, standing with hands crossed and eyes closed, appears behind a translucent veil of wax, as if suspended between visibility and disappearance. The work is designed to be viewed through the smooth reverse side of the wax panel, allowing the image to emerge from within, like a photographic

Brushes and Guns : The Heist of Monet's Sunrise
It was in the city of Le Havre, France, in 1872 that Claude Monet painted 'Impression, Sunrise,' which gave its name to the Impressionist movement. This famous painting was stolen from the Musée Marmottan in Paris on October 27, 1985. Thieves broke into the museum and pointed guns at the public. Fortunately, the painting was recovered in Corsica five years later. It seems that the thieves were negotiating with the Japanese Yakuza. We all know how Monet was fascinated by Japan

Sardines Inspiration: Paul Signac in Port Louis
In 1922, Paul Signac spends the summer in Port Louis, Brittany. Alongside Georges Seurat, he is one of the founders of the Pointillist movement. His technique is characterised by the use of distinct touches of colour. The optical blending of colours occurs when one contemplates the painting from a distance. In Port Louis, Paul Signac paints the fishing boats using a bright palette consisting of cadmium yellows, vermillion, rose madder, cerulean and cobalt blue, emerald green.
