In this rare circular tin—one of only three made by Ortaire de Coupigny—six vividly painted fish rest side by side, suspended in translucent resin. Measuring 16.5 cm in diameter and 5.5 cm high (approximately 6.5 x 2.2 inches), the piece invites the viewer into a miniature, self-contained marine world. Each fish is individually hand-painted, their bright colors and slightly startled expressions conveying both whimsy and quiet tension.
The round format reinforces the idea of a collective: a school of fish, a classroom, a gathering. Yet, in their stillness, the fish seem caught in a moment just before movement—posing, perhaps, or waiting. The piece relies on color, composition, and material transparency to achieve its visual depth and humor. School Assembly is a testament to Ortaire de Coupigny’s ability to transform the mundane into scenes of quiet surrealism and painterly charm.
