In Shark Zone, Ortaire de Coupigny stages a humorous and subtly theatrical encounter within the golden frame of a sardine tin. Four elongated fish, meticulously painted in layers of shimmering blues, purples, and greens, appear to swim cautiously beneath the bold wooden label: “SHARK ZONE.” Their expressions—wide-eyed, startled, frozen—suggest the anticipation of danger just beyond the frame.
The composition plays with narrative tension, light, and color. Suspended in resin, the fish appear almost luminous, with ripples of pigment echoing ocean depths. The tin itself, trimmed in gold and closed with a roll-top lid, is both container and stage—a capsule of anxiety and absurdity.
With a blend of craft, humor, and conceptual sharpness, Shark Zone exemplifies Ortaire de Coupigny’s transformation of the ordinary into vibrant, layered visual stories.
