Vers d’autres Finistère is an acrylic and collage painting on traditional Japanese shikishi board by Christian Halna du Fretay.
The composition presents a standing female figure in profile, integrated into a landscape of layered greens, deep reds, and luminous yellows. The body is not fully defined but suggested through overlapping planes of color. The figure appears to emerge from the surrounding vegetation and vertical forms, creating a continuous dialogue between human presence and environment.
Du Fretay works through figurative abstraction. He does not describe anatomy or landscape in detail. Instead, he constructs the image through controlled brushwork, textured layering, and chromatic contrast. The intense yellow field anchors the composition and intensifies the surrounding cooler greens and blues. A vertical red form introduces structural tension and visual rhythm.
The shikishi board, with its rigid surface and gold edge, reinforces the painting’s warmth and compositional clarity. Its compact format concentrates the visual energy. The gold trim subtly enhances the yellow tonal range and frames the work with a refined presence.
Part of the Contemporary Shikishi Art Project initiated by Art San Gallery, this piece demonstrates how a traditional Japanese support can host a contemporary European painterly language rooted in material, structure, and chromatic balance.
