“Hope” is an original mixed-media painting by South Korean artist Kwon YoungJin, created with watercolor, acryl gouache, and gesso on a traditional Japanese shikishi board. A pale hand gently holds a folded paper airplane before release—set against a clear blue background that radiates lightness and stillness. The moment is quiet but full of intent, capturing the delicate balance between holding on and letting go.

Kwon YoungJin’s work is rooted in emotional restraint and visual subtlety. She builds her surfaces slowly, layering translucent washes of color and matte textures with care. The soft whites and gentle lines in “Hope” reflect her signature approach, where themes of childhood, memory, and impermanence emerge through pared-down imagery and poetic gesture. Often drawing on fairy-tale references and personal memories, Kwon YoungJin’s paintings are spaces for reflection rather than narration.

Painted on a shikishi board—a traditional Japanese support made of fine paper laminated onto rigid backing—this piece is part of the 2025 Shikishi Art Project. Kwon YoungJin adapts her practice beautifully to the intimate scale and texture of the shikishi, honoring its calligraphic origins while offering a contemporary visual language defined by softness, silence, and presence.

This original painting is ideal for collectors interested in poetic, minimalist artwork with deep emotional resonance. Suitable for display framed or unframed.

"This “innovative” and detailed non-fiction picture book illustrated in “earthy” watercolours, charcoal, gouache and collage encourages readers to look afresh at a fascinating, but often maligned, bird."  Carnegie Winners Annoucement
