Ortaire de Coupigny’s Junior High School Marathon transforms a simple tin can into a dynamic scene of motion, hierarchy, and endurance. Inside the translucent wax, five fish are arranged in a descending diagonal, evoking the staggered positioning of runners in a long-distance race. The largest, most vividly painted fish leads the group, while the progressively smaller ones trail behind, each appearing to struggle to keep up—a humorous yet familiar nod to school competitions, where energy and determination often outweigh experience.

Coupigny’s use of metal, wax, and pigments enhances the playful narrative. The wax creates a sense of suspension, blurring details and giving the impression of movement within an enclosed space. The turquoise frame, with its smooth metallic finish, reinforces the aquatic theme while also resembling a race track or medal frame, subtly referencing the idea of competition and achievement. The fish, painted in bold hues of magenta, deep reds, gold, and black, shimmer under shifting light, their varying textures and markings adding to the sense of individuality within the group.

Above the scene, a wooden insert featuring hand-drawn marine life adds another layer of context. The small sketch—an organic detail signed by the artist—grounds the piece within Coupigny’s world, where humor, craftsmanship, and artistic transformation converge. The slightly tilted tin lid enhances the idea of the race just beginning, as if the starting gun has just fired and the fish are pushing forward.

For collectors of contemporary mixed-media artworks, Junior High School Marathon is a witty and visually engaging study in movement, containment, and playful storytelling. Coupigny’s ability to take an everyday object and turn it into a stage for humor and narrative makes this piece a charming and thought-provoking addition to his series.
