Art San Gallery is pleased to share the forthcoming Japanese publication of Clever Crow, illustrated by Olivia Lomenech Gill and written by Chris Butterworth. The Japanese edition, titled 『すごいぞカラス』, will be published by ひさかたチャイルド / HISAKATA CHILD on July 17, 2026.

Clever Crow won the 2025 Carnegie Medal for Illustration, one of the most respected awards in British children’s literature. Through layered textures, expressive forms, and a close attention to the intelligence of birds, Olivia Lomenech Gill invites readers to look again at an animal often surrounded by misunderstanding.
The Japanese edition is translated by Hajime Matsubara, a Japanese animal behavior scholar known for his research on the ecology, behavior, and evolution of crows. His involvement gives the book a particular resonance in Japan, where crows are familiar, intelligent, and often misunderstood birds.
The title 『すごいぞカラス』 has a lively and direct tone. It can be understood as “Crows are amazing!” or “Look how amazing crows are!” Rather than presenting the crow as a dark or troublesome bird, the title opens the book with curiosity and admiration.
As a gallery based in Japan and representing original works by Olivia Lomenech Gill, Art San Gallery is especially happy to see her award-winning illustrations reaching Japanese readers. The publication of 『すごいぞカラス』 also opens the possibility of presenting her original illustrations in Japan, allowing viewers to encounter the textures, marks, and delicate decisions behind the printed book.
More information will follow as plans develop for presenting original artworks by Olivia Lomenech Gill in Japan.
