This set includes 20 mini-format shikishi boards - 13.6 × 12.1 cm (≈ 5.3 × 4.8 in)- mini shikishi finished with a traditional gold edge and mounted with Gasen washi paper—a lightly textured surface specially treated to prevent bleeding.
The paper is coated with dōsa, a sizing treatment that reduces absorbency and allows inks and pigments to sit cleanly on the surface. This makes Gasen ideal for expressive techniques using ink, gouache, acrylic, oil pastel, or mixed media, where clarity and control are essential.
Selected in collaboration with a board maker in Mino, Japan, these boards combine tradition and versatility, giving artists a material that responds beautifully to dynamic brushwork and layered pigment.
Part of the Shikishi Art Project by Art San Gallery, this format invites small-scale experimentation, studies, and expressive compositions rooted in Japanese materials.
