French painter Sébastien Coueffic presents a series of oil paintings created on traditional Japanese shikishi boards, exploring architecture, light, and the quiet presence of inhabited spaces. While oil painting is not traditionally associated with shikishi, Coueffic approaches this support as a site of experimentation, allowing material, format, and image to interact in new ways.

The exhibition brings together a series of architectural oil paintings created on Japanese shikishi boards. Sébastien Coueffic focuses on houses, façades, street corners, and fragments of urban environments, rendered through bold yet controlled color relationships. Rather than depicting narrative scenes, these works explore how light, surface, and structure interact within an intimate format. Human presence is suggested indirectly — through windows, balconies, laundry, or the quiet geometry of built space — allowing architecture itself to emerge as the subject.

Working within the compact dimensions of the shikishi board, Coueffic treats architecture as both structure and surface. The oil paint remains visible and tactile, emphasizing the relationship between image and support. This dialogue between a European painting technique and a traditional Japanese format creates works that feel both experimental and grounded in material practice.

Presented at Art San Gallery in Gujo Hachiman, the exhibition continues the gallery’s exploration of artists working on Japanese shikishi boards through contemporary techniques and approaches.
